The advisory council committee on economic affairs on Tuesday agreed in principle to implement two projects worth Tk聽111.19 crore at the Ganabhaban to turn it into a July uprising memorial museum.
The committee reached the agreement at a meeting presided over by the interim government鈥檚 finance adviser, Salehuddin Ahmed, at the secretariat in the capital Dhaka in line with a decision made by the interim government on December 24 to preserve and exhibit memories of the July uprising at the Ganabhaban.
Being the official residence of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, the sprawling home on 150 acres of land close to the parliament building in the capital held a special place in the history of the July uprising.
The July uprising ousted the authoritarian regime of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024.
The deposed prime minister had given all kinds of repressive commands against the July protestors from the Ganabhaban before she fled to India on August 5, 2024, on a military aircraft.聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽
On the same day, hundreds of demonstrators stormed the building and took away various items, including cash, saris, jewellery, furniture, and even frozen fish, ducks, and rabbits. Some were seen consuming the food prepared in the kitchen.
The Ganabhaban had become a symbol of autocracy and tyranny in home and aboard because of 15 years of misrule by the Awami League regime.
The interim government which assumed power on August 8, 2024, wants to open the museum on August 5 on the first anniversary of the AL regime ouster.
The committee approved the implementation of the projects under direct purchase because of a shortage of time to complete necessary decoration and civil works by the deadline.
Civil works of the museum will be carried out by Civil Engineering Limited at Tk聽70.36 crore and the electrical and mechanical part of it will be implemented by Shuvra Traders at Tk聽40.82 crore.
