The police recovered the blood-stained body of a Dhaka University student, Sanju Baraik, 23, from Jagannath Hall premises early Monday.
Law enforcers, who recovered the body from beneath the newly constructed Rabindra Bhaban, suspect the incident as suicide.
A post from Sanju’s Facebook account, made around 2:30am Sunday, hinted at emotional distress and remorse, they said.
‘I have realised my mistakes. I kept disturbing someone for days and wrongly blamed others. I sincerely apologise to everyone. If I have harmed anyone, I take full responsibility. Please forgive me,’ read the post.
Sanju, a resident of Jagannath Hall, was a third-year anthropology student of the 2020–21 academic session. His home is in Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj.
Dhaka University proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said that the body was recovered in a bloodied state and sent to the morgue.
Jagannath Hall provost Debashish Pal told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the student had been suffering from mental health issues. ‘We learnt about his condition after speaking to his friends. He had been absent from the hall for two days and returned around 4:01am as per the CCTV footage. About ten minutes later, he went to the roof,’ he said.
‘We don’t have any CCTV cameras installed on the rooftop,’ he added.
When asked why the rooftop gate was open, he said that a notice had been issued prohibiting students from going there, but they often disregarded the instruction.
‘Even after closing the other gates to the roof, the one used by the lift operator who resides there has to remain open. Students take advantage of that and go there violating the instruction,’ he said.
He also stated that, Sanju’s body was received by his cousin around 4:30pm Monday, accompanied by his classmates and residents of the hall.
Shahbagh police officer-in-charge Khalid Monsur told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that CCTV footage showed the student falling from the building’s roof.
‘It is not yet clear whether he jumped or fell accidentally. He was depressed. Primary assessment suggests suicide, but the actual cause will be confirmed after investigation,’ he added.
