Four workers died and another one fell ill after they went down into a septic tank at a tea garden at Srimangal upazila in Moulvibazar early Thursday.

The deceased Nipen Fulmali, 27, Krishna Rabidas, 20, Shravan Nayek, 19, and Rana Nayek, 17, are residents and workers of Harin Chhara Tea Garden, a garden under the management of Finley Tea Company, at Srimangal, police said.

Shobuj Taju, a local, told reporters that Rana’s mobile phone accidentally fell into the septic tank at about 1:00am and his brother Shravan went down to retrieve it, but became unconscious inside the tank.

Trying to rescue Shravan, Rana and three other people also went down into the septic tank one after another and all of them fell unconscious inside the tank, he said.

Taju said that later other workers of the tea garden rushed to the spot and rescued the five in a critical condition.

He said that the victims had initially been taken to the Shrimangal Upazila Health Complex from where they were referred to the Moulvibazar 250-bed Sadar Hospital.

Moulvibazar hospital deputy supervisor Binendu Bhowmik told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that four out of the five died on their way to the hospital.

He said that the rest Rabi Bunarji was given primary treatment at the Moulvibazar hospital and then he was referred to the Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

‘The four people might have died due to poisoning inside the septic tank,’ the doctor said, adding that the reason could be ascertained after post-mortem examinations.

Shrimangal police station officer-in-charge Aminul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· in the afternoon that the bodies of the deceased were kept at the Moulvibazar hospital after completion of spot examinations.

‘Relatives of the deceased are trying to get permission of the local administration to cremate the bodies without post-mortem examinations,’ he added.
