Chief election commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin on Tuesday said that foreign observers who had certified the past three elections as credible would not be allowed to observe the forthcoming parliamentary election.
The CEC made the remarks while talking to reporters after holding a meeting with the Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Ajit Singh at the Election Commission office in the capital’s Agargaon area.
He said that many foreign observers, including representatives from the European Union, had already expressed their interest in monitoring the upcoming election.
However, those who had given certification for the previous three national elections will not be accepted this time, he said.
He said that the Canadian ambassador had inquired about the preparations for the elections and the commission had informed the envoy about their preparation.
The CEC said that they had also briefed the ambassador on the works they would start to raise awareness among the voters, as well as on various types of training now being conducted.
Regarding the election date or the possible time frame for the election, the Canadian high commissioner had inquired whether a specific date had been set.
The CEC said that he informed the envoy that no such date had been fixed and that there had been no discussion about the timeframe.
‘What you know about the deadline is what I know. I will inform you two months before the election day,’ he said.
The CEC identified the misuse of artificial intelligence in the election process as a major threat.
Noting that Canada had recently held elections and faced similar challenges, he told reporters that the EC sought Canada’s assistance on how to prevent such abuses.
