An 80-year-old man was killed and his wife critically injured in a suspected robbery at their home in the capital’s Jatrabari area early Monday.

The incident occurred at Khan Villa, a four-storey building at Bibir Bagicha’s Ityadi Goli area near Gate 1.

The deceased was Ismail Khan, 80, while his wife, Saleha Begum, 75, is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.

Jatrabari police station sub-inspector Awlad Hossain said that a team visited the house after receiving information, but found no one there. ‘We later went to the hospital and spoke to their relatives. Further details will be known upon investigation.’

According to preliminary findings, four suspected robbers broke into the couple’s first-floor apartment by cutting through the window grill.

The SI said that they physically assaulted the elderly couple and looted valuables. ‘But the exact amount of the stolen items is yet to be determined.’

Their daughter, Salma, who lives at Rayerbagh of Kadamtali, went to the scene with people of the area after learning about the incident. The couple was taken to DMCH, where doctors declared Ismail dead around 6:30am.

People of the area suspected that the assailants might have suffocated Ismail with a pillow during the robbery, and wounded Saleha Begum critically.
