Crimes, including murder, robbery, smuggling, drug dealing, and theft, are on the rise as the interim government has failed to restore the country’s law and order in the past 10 months since the political changeover on August 5, 2024.

During the period, political violence went unabated as 121 people were killed and 4,892 injured in 444 incidents that took place between August, 2024 and May, 2025, according to rights group Ain O Salish Kendra data updated till May 31 this year.

Of the 121 killings in political violence during the period, 74 or over 61 per cent of the total deaths were reported due to internal conflicts of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its front organisations.

Other deaths were reported due to clashes between Awami League and BNP, BNP and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami while few were killed in AL factional clashes, according to the rights body data.

The ASK data show that nine people were killed and 102 injured in May this year.

Many former and serving police officials believe that the police force could not get back its morale yet due to incidents of attacks on police personnel while carrying out duties after the force was accused of opening fire indiscriminately on students and people during the student-led mass uprising that forced the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina regime on August 5, 2024.

According to the police headquarters crime statistics, 341 murder cases were filed across the country in May, 336 cases in April, 316 cases in March, and 300 cases in February.

The PHQ, however, mentioned that some murders took place in previous months but were recorded in months under the review.

According to former inspector general of police Nurul Huda, there is no alternative for the government to go on hardline for restoring the law and order and curbing crime.

‘The police are yet to bounce back to its morale  after the massive uprising that killed over a thousand people. Many police members are facing criminal cases and many did flee from stations after the political changeover,’ he stated.

A total of 177 robbery cases were reported across the country in May, 149 cases in April, 171 cases in March, and 153 cases in February, the PHQ data showed.

In the morning of June 14, miscreants in Rapid Action Battalion uniform looted Tk 1.08 crore after halting four employees of a Nagad distributor who were riding two motorbikes at Sector-12 in the capital’s Uttara area.

On June 19, police arrested five people, including a dismissed police constable and a retired army sergeant, over the allegations of the robbery in RAB uniform during raids at different places in the capital.

Police also seized over Tk 22.10 lakh in cash and Tk 12 lakh in deposit with a bank and a private car in that case.

On May 31, a group of robbers took away Tk two lakh and 10 bhoris of gold from the ancestral home of additional deputy inspector general of Railway Police Abida Sultana in village Thengarband under Madhyapara union in Kaliakair upazila under Gazipur district.

The interim government led by Professor Muhamamd Yunus took over power on August 8, 2024 following the ouster of the AL regime on August 5.

Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5, 2024 and took shelter in India following her fall.

Additional inspector general of police for crimes and operations Khondoker Rafiqul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Tuesday that the number of crime incidents seemed high as the incumbent government encouraged people to file cases.

‘Police are recording cases whoever as victims wants to file a case. It is important to understand that we are also taking actions over most of the cases,’ he added.

The PHQ data show that 177 cases were filed under the Arms Act in May, 140 cases in April, 131 cases in March, and 101 cases in February.

A total of 62 police assault cases were filed in May against 52 cases in April.

On the other hand, the number of narcotics cases continued to rise over the past four months of this year as 4,443 cases were reported in May, followed by 4,392 cases in April, 4,075 cases in March, and 3,632 cases in February, according to the PHQ record.

Meanwhile, members of the Border Guard Bangladesh and the police were also attacked while raiding and arresting drug peddlers in June.

On June 19, three members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch, including Lalbagh Zone assistant commissioner Junayed Hasan Shoeb, assistant sub-inspector Atik Hasan, and constable Sujan, were injured as drug peddlers opened fire on them in the capital’s Fakirapool area.

Police arrested three people and seized a private car on the spot in this connection.

On June 9, at least 10 BGB personnel, including its 64-Battalion deputy commander, were injured as accomplices of an arrested Yaba peddling suspect attacked a BGB patrol team in Moulvibazar area under Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar district.

The incident took place at about 4:30pm on June 9 when accomplices of arrested suspect Jahangir Alam attacked the BGB patrol team with locally made firearms, sharp weapons, brickbats, and sticks to snatch away the arrestee, according to BGB officials.

Political and mob violence has also been going unabated over the interim government time while many rights bodies condemned the unending mob violence.

On June 1, a man was killed and five others were injured when two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party engaged in a turf war in Nakobaria village of Kaliganj upazila under Jhenaidah district.

A man who had suffered bullet injuries during a factional clash between the BNP’s student wing and its youth front in Rupganj under Narayanganj died on June 10 while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The deceased, Mamun Hossain, 32, was a cylindered gas trader and the younger brother of Bhulta union Juba Dal organising secretary Badal Hossain.

Asked about police actions taken in political violence, additional IGP Khondoker Rafiqul said that political parties engaged in violence due to their frustration over repression in past years.

‘We are documenting each case of political murders,’ he said, hoping that the situation would come down before the next Jatiya Sangsad elections.

Mob violence has also been going unabated over the interim government time as 174 people were killed in such incidents between August, 2024 and May, 2025.

On June 22, mob violence and humiliation before and during the arrest of former chief election commissioner and freedom fighter KM Nurul Huda was condemned by different political parties and rights bodies.

Rights group Ain O Salish Kendra in a statement on Tuesday condemned the mob attack on barber Paresh Chandra Shil, 69, and his son Bishnu Chandra Shil, 35, and handing them over to police on the allegations of making derogatory comment on prophet Muhammad in Lalomonirhat town on June 20.

While talking to reporters after the 10th advisory council meeting on the country’s law and order at the secretariat in the capital on Tuesday, home affairs adviser retired Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that the government would take stern actions against mob creators while police members would also face music for their inaction during mob violence.
