At least 10 Border Guard Bangladesh personnel, including its 64 Battalion deputy commander, were injured as supporters of an arrested Yaba peddling suspect attacked a BGB patrol team in the Moulvibazar area under Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar district Monday afternoon.
The incident took place at about 4:30pm on Monday when followers of arrested drug peddling suspect Jahangir Alam attacked a BGB patrol team with locally made firearms, sharp weapons, brickbats and sticks to snatch the arrestee, according to BGB officials.
BGB 64 Battalion in Ukhiya commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Jasim Uddin said that the miscreants attacked the BGB members and vandalised their vehicles to snatch Jahangir from their custody.
‘The attackers also tried to snatch the firearms of BGB personnel. We opened blank fire in self-defence and to bring the situation under control. A total of 10 BGB personnel became injured in the attack,’ said the BGB official, adding that the injured were admitted to Teknafr Upazila Health Complex.
He also claimed that Jahangir’s supporters blocked the road by setting fire to boats and attacked Kharongkhali border outpost to snatch Jahangir.
Teknaf police officer-in-charge Ataur Rahman Khandaker said that they produced Jahangir before a Cox’s Bazar court on Tuesday and the court sent him to jail.
Jahangir and his followers created obstacles during a BGB operation at Hinla Border Outpost against human trafficking and drug peddling on May 28, according to a BGB-64 Battalion press release issued on Tuesday.
The BGB release also said that Jahangir and his followers also launched a sudden attack on the patrol team with locally made arms and weapons on May 28.
BGB filed a case with Teknaf police station on May 28 naming Jahangir and his 15 followers and 20-30 unnamed people over the attack.
