
A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed three individuals on one-day remand each in a case filed over assaulting two Dhaka University students who reportedly protested at stalking their female fellow.
The incident took place at ‘Jasmin Fabrics’ shop at the Chandni Chawk market in the capital Dhaka on Monday night.
The accused are Nazrul Islam Milon, Md Chunnu Mia and Nazmul.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza’s court passed the order as police produced the trio before the court seeking a five-day remand for each.
New Market police officer-in-charge AKM Mahfuzul Haque said that one of the victims filed the case against five named individuals over the incident.
Besides, 50 to 60 unidentified individuals were also accused in the case, he said, adding that the police are conducting operations to arrest the other accused.
‘The entire area is under CCTV surveillance and the other accused will be arrested soon after analysing the video,’ added the police officer.
The victim, Shahedul Islam, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that he fell to the ground after the mob beat him and then he was taken to a separate room on the second floor of Chandni Chawk Market.
‘I was beaten physically and they even threatened to kill me,’ he said.
The Dhaka University authorities on Tuesday, meanwhile, protested at the assault on two of their students and urged the law enforcement agencies to ensure prompt justice for those involved, DU correspondent reported.
In a press release issued by the university’s public relations office, the university administration also warned of stern action if any DU student was physically assaulted in the future.
DU vice-chancellor professor Dr Niaz Ahmad Khan visited the injured students at the Shaheed Dr Mohammad Mortaza Medical Centre on the campus.
According to witnesses, DU students Mohammad Shahedul Islam, Ayazur Rahman and a female student went to Chandni Chawk to buy clothes on Monday night at about 8:30pm.
As they decided to leave after bargaining, a shopkeeper made derogatory remarks targeting the female student.
When Shahedul and Ayazur protested against the remarks, the shop manager along with staff from nearby shops attacked them, says the DU release.
Later, the injured were taken to the hospital.
After the news of the incident circulated, DU students gathered in front of the New Market police station and held protests there, demanding arrests of the perpetrators.
DU proctor Saifuddin Ahmed, Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall provost professor Md Faruk Shah, assistant proctors and members of the proctorial team were present at the protest site.
