The Appellate Division on Monday upheld the Appellate Division chamber judge鈥檚 decision to stay the High Court鈥檚 orders that granted bail to 23 pro-Awami League lawyers in a case related to the July鈥揂ugust mass uprising.

A three-judge bench comprising Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Farah Mahbub passed the order after disposing of a petition filed by the state seeking permission to appeal against the bail orders.

The bench also directed the High Court to dispose of within two weeks the rules it issued earlier asking the government to explain why the detained AL lawyers would not be granted bail.

Earlier on April 30, the Appellate Division chamber judge stayed until May 5 the High Court bail orders granted to at least 23 pro-AL leaders and activists in similar cases.

The chamber judge also scheduled a full hearing on the state鈥檚 appeal challenging the bail orders for May 5.

A total of 61 pro-AL lawyers were sent to jail on April 6 after surrendering before the lower court in connection with the case.

The Kashimpur High Security Central Jail鈥檚 senior superintendent Abdullah Al Mamun told 抖阴精品 on Monday that they received bail orders for 23 out of the 61.

Only Saidur Rahman Manik, a former president of the Dhaka Bar Association, has been freed on bail after getting clearance from the intelligence officials.

Saidur Rahman, who is suffering from various health complications was undergoing treatment, according to pro-AL lawyers.

The case was filed over the alleged assault of pro-Bangladesh Nationalist Party lawyers, vandalism of their chambers, and attempt to murder them during the anti-discrimination student movement on August 4, 2024, a day before prime minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted from power on August 5, 2024amid a student-led mass uprising.

Additional attorney general Abdul Zabbar Bhuiyan opposed the bails while senior lawyers MK Rahman, Azharullah Bhuiyan and Motaher Hossain Sazu defended their fellow friends.
