MI Farooqui

Veteran lawyer MI Farooqui died at his home at Pallabi in Dhaka on Saturday night.

He was 86.


He is survived by his widow, one son and two daughters.

His namaz-e-janaza was held on the Supreme Court premises after zuhr prayers on Sunday.

The Supreme Court also suspended proceedings for half a day to pay tribute to MI Farooqui.

According to a notice issued by Mohammad Moazzem Hossain, registrar of the High Court division for judicial administration, the Appellate Division sat until 11:00am and the High Court until 1:15pm.

Supreme Court judges, attorney general, lawyers, his colleagues and well-wishers paid their last respects to him on the SC premises.

He was later laid to rest at Azimpur Graveyard in the capital.

A revered figure in the legal community, Advocate Farooqui was widely recognised for his lifelong dedication to justice and jurisprudence.

He authored several books, including Law of Abandoned Property, Citizenship and Nationalities in Bangladesh and Interpreting Vested Property Law in Bangladesh: A Comprehensive Review.

Farooqui played a prominent role in a number of constitutional cases.

Notably, he was involved in proceedings that led the Supreme Court to declare the fifth amendment to the constitution and the non-party caretaker government system illegal.

His professional journey was also closely linked to journalism.

He began his career as a court correspondent for The Bangladesh Observer, where he worked under senior advocate Hamidul Haque Chowdhury, who was also a journalist for the same newspaper.
