At least two women were killed and three more people, including children, were burnt in Sunday night鈥檚 gas cylinder explosion in the Joydevpur area of Gazipur.

The deceased are Sheema Akhter, 30, and Taslima Begum, 40, said Bason police station sub-inspector Sajib Khan on Tuesday. Taslima was five months pregnant.

The burn victims are Parveen Akhter, 35, her one-and-a-half-year old child Ayan and Taslima Begum鈥檚 daughter Tanjila Begum, 10.

According to police and local people, five people suffered burns after a gas cylinder exploded in a house in the Joydevpur area of Gazipur at about 10:45pm on Sunday.

Local people rescued the five injured and rushed them to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur.

Later, they were admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, where Sheema died on Monday afternoon and Taslima on early Tuesday while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

SI Sajib said that police initially assumed that the gas in the house leaked from a gas cylinder and the incident occurred when the gas came in contact with the fire while striking a match for cooking.

Referring to doctors, the officer said that Parveen sustained 32 per cent burns to her body while Tanjila 90 per cent, Taslima 95 per cent and Ayan 28 per cent.

Legal action is underway in this regard, said Sajib.
