
3 robbery suspects beaten to death in Shariatpur
A robbery gang blocked the Santhia-Bera road with logs and looted at least eight vehicles near the Chechania Bridge under Santhia upazila in Pabna early Saturday and three suspected robbers were beaten to death after a robbery attempt in Shariatpur Friday evening.
The identities of the deceased people in the Shariatpur incident could not be known until Saturday evening.
The incidents took place amid the law enforcers’ ongoing special drives and intensified patrolling by setting up checkpoints across the country to curb crimes.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Pabna, quoting Santhia police officer-in-charge Saidur Rahman, reported that the robbery took place at about 1:30am on Saturday when, according to local people, at least eight vehicles were robbed.
Police and locals said that a gang of seven or eight robbers armed with machetes, knives, and other locally made sharp weapons first stopped a truck by putting logs on the road near the Chechania Bridge, leaving several vehicles to get stuck.
The robbers allegedly looted valuables and money in cash from the passengers and staff of all the vehicles there.
The chief adviser’s deputy press secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder at a press briefing in Dhaka on Saturday, however, said that five vehicles – one microbus, a CNG-run auto rickshaw, one motorbike and two trucks -- were robbed in Pabna.
Our Correspondent in Shariatpur, quoting Shariatpur superintendent of police Md Nazrul Islam, reported that seven suspected robbers were beaten by the local people during a robbery attempt at Rajarhat at about 9:00pm on Friday.
On information, police rushed to the spot, rescued the injured suspects, and sent them to hospital where doctors declared two of them dead, he said.
A firearm and a speedboat were recovered from the scene, the police said.
Local people said that seven robbers entered at Rajarhat of Madaripur’s Kalkini upazila at about 9:00pm.
While fleeing through the Kirtinasha River by a speed boat, the robbers were intercepted by enraged locals in the Tetulia area under Sadar upazila in Shariatpur.
They caught seven robbery suspects and gave them a good beating.
The police later rescued them and sent them to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital where two declared were dead.
Two other seriously injured ones were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where one more died later, the police said.
