The government on Sunday declared February 25 Jatiya Shaheed Sena Dibas.
The announcement was made against the backdrop of the demand from the families of the victim army officers in the February 25-26, 2009 Bangladesh Rifles mutiny for announcing the day ‘Shaheed Sena Dibas’.
The Cabinet Division on Sunday issued a circular in this regard and instructed all the related ministries, divisions, and organisations to comply with the decision to observe the day appropriately.
The circular signed by the division’s deputy secretary Tania Afroz said that the day will not be a public holiday.
The government’s decision came just two days before the BDR carnage day.Â
On February 12, slain Colonel Md Mojibul Haque’s wife Nehreen Ferdousi at a press conference at the Retired Armed Forces Officers’ Welfare Association in Dhaka, on behalf of the victim army officers’ families, had urged the government to declare February 25 ‘Shaheed Sena Dibas’.
The victim officers’ families also launched Shaheed Sena Officers’ Association to press their demand to ensure justice.
On February 25-26, 2009, at least 74 people, including 57 army officers, were killed in the BDR carnage.
On December 22, 2024, the interim government formed a seven-member National Independent Investigation Commission to investigate the 2009 BDR massacre.
The commission was asked to submit its report within three months of its formation.
