A fire that broke out in a building in the Islambagh area of the capital on Saturday afternoon was brought under control after about an hour of effort by eight firefighting units.
Fire Service and Civil Defence assistant director Kazi Nozmunzzaman told reporters in front of the spot that there were several plastic shops and small factories, on top of which many tin-shed houses were built.
It could not be immediately known where the fire broke out first while the reason for the fire could be confirmed after an investigation, the officer said, adding that no casualties were reported so far.
At least 20 to 30 houses and shops were burnt in the fire, said Anwarul Islam, warehouse inspector at the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters media cell.
The fire was reported at about 3:17pm while the blaze was brought under control at about 4:27, added the fire service official.
