
Freedom fighter and former Bangladesh Army chief KM Shafiullah, who was the commander of sector 3 during the War of Independence of Bangladesh in 1971, died on Sunday morning while undergoing treatment at Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka city.
He was 90.
KM Shafiullah, also a former Bangladesh Army major general, breathed his last at about 8:45am on Sunday, Inter Services Public Relations Directorate director Lieutenant Colonel Sami Ud Daula Chowdhury said.
‘Sir was admitted to the hospital on January 2 with multiple complexities and died on Sunday morning,’ ISPR director Sami told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
The freedom fighter was buried at Banani Military Graveyard with proper state honour following his second namaz-e-janaza at about 4:00pm Army at Central Mosque at Dhaka Cantonment, said a ISPR release.
The release said that shipping, textiles and jute adviser retired brigadier general M Sakhawat Hossain, liberation war affairs adviser Faruk-E-Azam and Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman, among others, were present at the namaz-e-janaza.
It said that the Bangladesh Army expressed deep shock at the death of the adviser.
The interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today expressed deep shock at the death of retired major general KM Shafiullah, one of the sector commanders of the War of Independence and former army chief, said a press release of the CA press wing issued following his death.
In a condolence message, Professor Yunus said that KM Shafiullah played an important role as a sector commander during the War of Independence in 1971.
In 1971, he was the second chief of the Second East Bengal Regiment in Joydevpur, he added.
Shafiullah, a decorated war hero, led the ‘S’ Force through the war, winning the gallantry award ‘Bir Uttam’ for his remarkable contribution to the War of Independence, he said.
Yunus prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul of KM Shafiullah and expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
Shafiullah served as the army chief from April 7, 1972 to August 24, 1975.
Shafiullah joined the Awami League in 1995 and elected as a lawmaker in the 1996 general election.
