
The first patient in Bangladesh diagnosed with the human metapneumovirus died while undergoing treatment at the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Mohakhali, Directorate General of Health Services confirmed the information on Thursday.
Sanjida Akter, 30, was the only diagnosed HMPV patient in the country this year. She passed away on Wednesday evening. She had been suffering from other diseases as well.
Earlier on Sunday, the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research revealed that the patient, a woman from Bhairab in Kishoreganj district, had contracted the virus.
Md Sayedur Rahman, special assistant to the health adviser, at a briefing on the day at the secretariat confirmed the death and said that the disease was not new and not a highly dangerous virus.
He said that the patient had obesity and thyroid issues, among other complaints, and died of multi-organ failure. ‘Generally, HMPV is not a deadly disease,’ he said, urging people to wear mask.
Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control And Research director Tahmina Shirin, said that every year they found 2–4 cases of HMPV infection. Bangladesh in 2017 for the first time detected the presence of the virus.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University former vice-chancellor and virology professor Md Nazrul islam said that mortality rate of the patients infected by the virus was very low but it might become dangerous with comorbidity.
