The Chattogram Elevated Expressway has been renamed after Wasim Akram, the first martyr of the July-August uprising in Chattogram, to preserve the memory of his sacrifice for future generations.
Housing and public works adviser Adilur Rahman Khan inaugurated the toll collection process for the expressway in Chattogram on Friday.Ìý
‘We are establishing memorials countrywide to commemorate the martyrs of the historic movement, ensuring that their contributions are remembered by future generations,’ said Adilur.
Chattogram City Corporation mayor Shahadat Hossain, Chattogram Development Authority chairman Md Nurul Karim, CDA board member Zahidul Karim Kochi, and CDA chief engineer Kazi Hasan Bin Shams were present at the ceremony.Ìý
The toll collection officially commenced with mayor Shahadat Hossain paying the first toll, followed by CDA chairman Md Nurul Karim.Ìý
Previously known as Mayor Mohiuddin Chowdhury CDA Expressway, the Ministry of Housing and Public Works directed the renaming of the expressway after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed student wing Chhatra Dal leader through an order issued on Wednesday.

According to the CDA, 10 categories of vehicles are permitted to use the elevated expressway, excluding motorcycles and trailers.
Wasim Akram, a third-year sociology undergraduate at Chattogram College and joint convener of its Chhatra Dal unit, was istrictmartyred on July 16 during the student-led mass uprising in Muradpur area of the district.
