The Attorney General’s Office on Thursday paid tribute to former attorney general AF Hassan Ariff, who passed away on December 20, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, professionalism, and significant contributions to Bangladesh’s legal landscape.

Speaking at the memorial event organised by the office’s staff members and employees, attorney general Md Asaduzzaman reflected on Ariff’s distinguished career, describing him as a rare figure whose calm demeanor and steadfast commitment to justice earned him respect across the legal fraternity.

All the proceedings of the Supreme Court remained suspended for Thursday to honour the senior lawyer Ariff, who was sitting land adviser to the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus at the time of his death.

AF Hassan Ariff served as the 11th attorney general of Bangladesh from October 14, 2001, to April 30, 2005, during the BNP-led government.

Asaduzzaman, now the 17th attorney general, recalled recommending Ariff for the position when both were abroad as election observers.

‘Hassan Ariff never raised his voice in court yet always made compelling arguments. His calm and friendly nature set him apart,’ said Asaduzzaman.

Additional attorneys general Mohammad Abdul Jabber Bhuiyan, Mohammad Arshadur Rouf, and Aneek Rushed Haque, along with staff members, deputies, and Solicitor Rafizul Islam, attended the event. Supreme Court lawyer Moaz Ariff, the late attorney general’s son, shared heartfelt anecdotes about his father’s life and work.

The event was chaired by Md Nasir Uddin, president of the Attorney General’s Office Staff and Employee Association, and moderated by the association’s general secretary Md Wahidul Alam.
