
Many flood-affected people in Feni and Noakhali districts alleged that they got hardly any or very insufficient relief amid the ongoing flood in eastern, south-eastern and north-eastern Bangladesh.
The people stranded in remote localities are desperately waiting for relief and medical support amid a situation of complete breakdown of communications system.
The death toll in the flood reached 71 as four more deaths were recorded on Tuesday, as per the disaster management and relief ministry.
A daily flood situation report issued by the ministry on the day also showed that the number of marooned families in the 11 affected districts stood at 5.82 lakh.
At a press conference at the ministry conference room in the secretariat, the Disaster management and relief adviser Bir Pratik Farooq-e-Azam said that the ministry was assessing the extent of damages in the flood.
Though there was some mismanagement, relief was distributed at the most remote areas by Bangladesh army, he said.
Since August 28, the daily report showed till Tuesday that so far Tk 4.52 crore was distributed in cash help to the flood-affected people and the ministry distributed 20,650 tonnes of rice, 15,000 packets of dry food, and Tk 70 lakh was equally distributed for baby food and fodder.
On Tuesday, as per the report, Feni recorded the highest 28 deaths, Cumilla recorded 19 deaths, Noakhali 11 deaths, Chattogram six, Cox’s Bazar three, and Khagrachhari, Brahmanbaria, Lakshmipur and Moulvibazar one death each.
Around 2.84 lakh people are still living in 3,612 flood shelters in the affected districts of eastern, south-eastern and north-eastern Bangladesh.
The flood has left a trail of destruction in agricultural fields and fish farms, households, highways and roads, educational institutions and other infrastructure in these districts.
Nazrul Islam, a resident of Dakkhin Mohila Ghat area in Uttar Kaotoli village under Mirza Nagar union in Porshuram upazila, said that the embankment of the river Muhuri broke for the third time along with his home in the flood.
‘I did not get any government relief even after passing 14 devastating days,’ he said, adding, ‘yesterday I stood in front of the Shaheed Minar in Feni with my daughter and held a placard requesting for relief.’
Nazrul, a farmer in profession, added that he got relief from the Bangladesh Air Force and a non-government organisation only.  Â
Feni sadar upazila Kalidah union’s Uttar Gobindapur village resident Nasir said that till Tuesday afternoon water was still on the village’s roads while only three days ago flood water was inside his home.
‘No poor families in this village got any relief from the government or non-government sources,’ he said and mentioned that only some locals helped them.
Mizanur Rahman from Satyapur village under Sindurpur union in Daganbhuiyan upazila said that water did not recede from the village road after 14 days and till Tuesday he did not get any government relief.
But he got dry foods from non-government sources, he added.
Selina Akhter, a resident of Dakkhin Boroiya village under Munshirhat union in Phulgazi upazila, alleged that as the chairman and the members were absconding since August and they did not get any government relief yet.
Razapur union’s Jainarayanpur village resident Parul Akhter also said the same.
Porshuram upazila nirbahi officer Afroza Habib Shapla said that despite the absence of the local representatives, the students distributed government and non-government relief.
A press note, issued by the Feni additional deputy commissioner Momena Akhter on Monday, read that till September 2 in the district, 10 lakh people were affected and 1.60 lakh packets of dry foods were districted from government and non-government sources.
Armed forces also distributed 63,000 packets of dry foods and government and non-government relief activities were still continuing, the note added.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Noakhali reported that the flood affected people, who are still stranded in water, alleged that they were not getting relief.
Md Shabuddin, a resident of Andarchar union under sadar upazila, said that in his house there was still knee-high water and he did not get anything but dry foods.
Another resident of the area, Rahmatullah alleged that he got very insufficient relief.
Sadar upazila’s Newazpur union resident Hazi Saifullah also alleged that they were not getting sufficient relief.
Same allegation had been echoed by the residents of Begumganj upazila residents.
People living on high grounds also alleged about lack of relief after water receded which left a trail of destruction everywhere.
Noakhali deputy commissioner Dewan Mahbubur Rahman said that they had sufficient stock of relief and they were sending relief as per demands.
¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Cumilla reported that people of at least six villages adjacent to the embankment of Burichang upazila and the neighbouring villages Indravati and Berajajal demanded sufficient relief.
Though some water receded, many people are still waterlogged in Sadar upazila part, Burichang and Brahmanpara.
