Employees of about 200 shops at Bashundhara City Shopping Mall staged demonstrations demanding 10-hour workdays and the right to government holidays on Monday in front of the shopping complex.
They also demanded the removal of the shopping mall in-charge Mohsinul Karim terming Karim as an ‘autocrat’.
The protest continued for about seven hours from 12:00noon to 7:00pm in the presence of members of the Bangladesh Army and Border Guard Bangladesh.
Md Hridoy, an employee of a shop at level 2 of the complex, said that employees wanted to work from 10:00am to 8:00pm instead of 10:00am to 10:00pm.
‘We are now working for 12 hours. We want to 10-hour workday,’ he said.
Hridoy also added that they had been working on government holidays, including Shab-e-Barat, and even on May 1, the International Workers’ Day.
Rimi Saha, another employee who works at a shop at Level-4, said that they took to the streets demanding the removal of the in-charge of the shopping complex Mohsinul Karim.
‘We do not want to work during all government and international holidays,’ she said, adding that they had ended their protest at about 7:00pm as a team went to meet the authorities concerned.
Bashundhara Group media adviser Mohammad Abu Tayeb told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that if the allegations against Karim were found to be true, he would be withdrawn from the shopping mall.
‘We have sold shops to the shop owners. Therefore, decisions on working hours will be taken by the shop owners association,’ he added.
