People on Wednesday beat a member of the Detective Branch of Police in Rajshahi for pointing his pistol at a businessperson following a personal dispute over a piece of land.
Injured assistant sub-inspector Asraful Islam, a resident of Tultulipara area in the Rajshahi city, was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital following the attack.
According to witnesses and local people, despite being a police member, Ashraful got used to buy and sell land in different areas of the city.
On Wednesday, Ashraful contacted Mizanur Rahman, who also buys and sells land, over the phone and asked the latter to meet him at 11:00am.
At one stage of their altercation over a piece of land, Ashraful started beating Mizanur, the witnesses said, adding that the police member also beat another person named Nasir who went to save Mizanur.
When ASI Ashraful took out his pistol and pointed at Mizanur, local people who were witnessing the incident rushed there, snatched the pistol and beat up the policeman.
Mizanur Rahman said that ASI Ashraful would have shot at him if the locals had not taken away the pistol.
He said that they had informed the Rajshahi deputy commissioner of the incident and would hand over the pistol if anyone from the administration or army members came to them.
ASI Ashraful could not be reached for his comment as he was admitted to the hospital.
