Talking about taking measures against corruption, prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday brought up the issue of wealth of a former employee of her house.
‘He [unnamed] worked in my house as a peon. Now he owns Tk 400 crore. He is using helicopters for travelling. How did he make so much money? After I found out, I took action,’ she said at a press conference held at her official residence, Ganabhaban, to discuss outcomes of her recent visit to China.
Without sharing the name of the peon, the prime minister said that she seized the card and other documents whenever she knew.
Pointing out that corrupt people are being caught because of the strictness of the government, the prime minister said, ‘No one has conducted this kind of drives against corruption before. I have made the country free from militancy. Corruption is a longstanding problem. These messes must be cleared.’
Responding to a journalist’s question that the picture of corruption in various sectors is coming to the fore, the prime minister said, ‘I do not believe that the image of the government will be ruined by catching the corrupt. My responsibility is to address the irregularities and lead the country to a position.’
Corruption is increasing downwards, she said, adding that corruption was at such a level that work could not be done.
‘The situation has changed… when I gave my hand. I will not let corrupt people go. I don’t tolerate any relations. There will be zero tolerance against corruption,’ she said.
