The office of Gopalganj district’s deputy commissioner had taken control of the Savanna Eco Resort and Natural Park owned by the former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed and his family, as the court had appointed them as receivers of the assets.

Besides, the Anti-Corruption Commission on Saturday filed a case against several employees of the resort on charges of attempting to steal 590 kg of fish from the pond of the resort.

Sunday is the scheduled date for the ACC to interrogate Benazir’s wife, Jissan Mirza, and their daughters over illegal wealth.

They, however, are unlikely to appear before the commission on that day as they are reportedly staying abroad.

The ACC on Thursday fixed June 23 for Benazir to appear before the commission as he did not appear on the scheduled date for interrogation.

On May 28, the commission summoned Benazir to appear before it on June 6 and his wife Jissan Mirza  and their daughters on June 9 to make statements on the allegations of amassing illegal wealth.

On Friday night, two teams of Gopalganj district administration and the ACC Gopalganj office went to the Savanna Eco Resort, and they took control of it through an announcement at 11:30 pm.

Earlier on Thursday, the Dhaka senior special judge court appointed the Gopalganj DC office as the administrator of the resort.

The activities of the park resumed on Saturday as per the instructions of the district administration, but the resort has yet to start accepting bookings.

Officials said that they would be able to resume the full activities of the park and resort within a few days.

Kazi Mahbubul Alam, DC of Gopalganj, said that everything, including the maintenance of the resort, will be conducted by the district administration following the court order and a committee will be formed to run the resort.

Officials of the ACC and DC offices also visited Savanna Eco Resorts on Saturday and listed the properties, but they did not find any incidents of theft of any valuables from the resort.

Asked, ACC deputy director Mashiur Rahman said, ‘We listed all the valuables of Savanna Resort and Park but did not find any damage or theft incidents there.’

Mashiur, also head of the ACC Gopalganj office, said that they filed a case against several employees of the resort for attempting to steal and sell fish weighing around 590 kg from the pond of the resort on Friday night.

Sohrab Hossain Sohel, assistant director of ACC, filed a case with Gopalganj Sadar police station on Saturday against Safiqul Islam, an official of the hatchery department of the resort, and other unknown individuals.

According to the case statement, ACC officials went to the resort and found fishermen fishing in a 20-acre pond inside the resort on Friday evening, and they were trying to sell 555 kilograms of Tilapia fish and 37.50 kilograms of Catla fish.

The fisherman told ACC officials that they were fishing following the orders of Safiqul Islam, who fled the spot after the arrival of ACC officials.

As fish is a perishable item, the seized 590 kg of fish was sold for Tk 83,754 at an auction among fishermen with the help of local fisheries officers, and the money was deposited in the government treasury.

Benazir built the Savanna Eco Resort and Natural Park in Bairagitol union in Sadar upazila while he was the director general of the Rapid Action Battalion and inspector general of police from 2015 to 2022.

The ACC opened an inquiry following media reports on Benazir’s wealth on April 18.

Later, a Dhaka court ordered to seize all the properties of Benazir and his family members under 202 deeds, including the property of Savanna Eco Resort Pvt Ltd.
