Election to the post of six deans under six faculties of Jahangirnagar University will be held on May 15.

The election is going to be held following Section 26 (5) of the Jahangirnagar University Act 1973.


Returning officer of the election, Abu Hasan, also the registrar of the university, announced the final list of the candidates on Sunday.

According to the announcement, a total of 11 teachers of the university are vying for six posts under six faculties.

Professor Khandakar Ashraful Munim of economics and professor Bashir Ahmed of government and politics department are vying for the dean post of the social sciences faculty.

The candidates for the physical and mathematical sciences faculty dean are professor Farid Ahmed of physics, professor Tapan Kumar Saha of chemistry, and professor Abdur Rab of mathematics department of the university.

Professor Arifa Sultana of history and professor Mozammel Haque of the archaeology department are candidates for the dean post of the arts and humanities faculty.

Professor Nuhu Alam of botany and professor Sohel Ahmed of the biochemistry and molecular biology department are vying for the dean post of the biological sciences faculty.

Meanwhile, professor Nigar Sultana has already been elected as the dean of the business studies faculty as the returning officer scrapped the candidacy of other three teachers amid violation of the election code.

Associate professor Tapas Kumar Das has also been elected as the dean of the law faculty as none but Tapas Kumar collected the nomination form for the post.

Returning officer of the election, Abu Hasan, said that about 600 teachers were expected to cast their votes on May 15 at the university club.

The last election to elect deans was held on May 10, 2016.
