Naripokkho, a rights organisation, in a statement on Tuesday condemned the arrest of a man in Shariatpur for allegedly ‘hurting religious feelings’ by his Facebook post using Lalon Fakir’s song.
The arrested is Sanjay Rakshit, 40, a resident of Bhedarganj upazila in Shariatpur.
The rights body demanded that the baseless and false charges levelled against Sanjay should be withdrawn immediately, said a press release.
It also demanded release of Sanjay without any condition immediately.
It alleged that the arrest was a conspiracy to destroy the long cultural tradition of the country.
The organisation also urged the government to take effective measures to prevent misuse of the Cybersecurity Act.
There have been several incidents including arrest, harassment and torture against some people, especially against minorities, under the CSA on the pretext of ‘hurting religious feelings’ which undermine people’s civil rights, said the statement.
On Saturday, Sanjoy, a local goldsmith, posted two lines from a Lalon’s song titled ‘Sob Loke Koy Lalon Ki Jaat Ei Sansare,’ that went viral and caused uproar in the local Muslim community.
Later, a crowd gathered near Sanjoy’s house and local people informed the police.
Police went to the spot and brought him to the police station.
