A group of aggrieved employees of Islami Bank Bangladesh on Tuesday demonstrated in front of the bank’s head office at Motijheel in the capital Dhaka, protesting against being deprived of official benefits and promotions over the years.
This unrests came following the fall of Sheikh Hasina as prime minister on Monday.
Angry officials vandalised the Bangabandhu Corner set at the bank’s head office.
Several human resources department officials were allegedly assaulted on the day.
The employees announced that executives who joined after 2017 would no longer be allowed to enter the bank and demanded punishment for S Alam Group’s senior officials and its appointees at Islami Bank.
The bank’s managing director and deputy managing director did not come to the office on the day, officials said.
After the incident, the bank’s CBA leader, Anisur Rahman, addressed the agitated officials, saying, ‘Please remain calm. Islami Bank that was taken over will be restored.’
Anisur also stated that all illegal appointments made without tests since 2017 would be cancelled and those unlawfully dismissed during this period would be reinstated.
He assured that those deprived of promotions over the last seven years would receive their due promotions.
Meanwhile, there were minimal activities in the country’s banks on Tuesday.
Bankers and customers were concerned about their security amid continued unrests in the country.
Most bankers left their respective offices early due to the fears.
Customers were reluctant to withdraw funds, fearing for the safety of the cash, bankers said.
