The police have filed a case with Shahbagh police station accusing 1,000 to 1,200 unnamed people for their alleged involvement in Tuesday’s clash at the capital’s secretariat area.
The case was lodged Tuesday night over clashes between protesting Higher Secondary Certificate examinees and members of the law enforcement and security forces, Shahbagh police station officer-in-charge Md Khalid Mansur said on Wednesday.
OC Khalid said that the case was filed for storming into the secretariat violating section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure that restricts rallies and demonstrations in the area, carrying out vandalism there, attacking and injuring police personnel, and obstructing the police from discharging their duties.
Responding to a question whether there was any political influence in the incident, he said that some video clips went viral on social media platform and police were investigating the matter.
‘We are investigating the case. None has been arrested so far,’ said the OC.
The protesters stormed into the secretariat, mainly demanding the resignation of the education adviser and the secretary for their alleged failure to postpone Tuesday’s HSC and equivalent examinations at the appropriate time.
The clash at the secretariat left over 100 protesting students and 16 members of the law enforcement and security forces injured.
The government, at about 3:00am on Tuesday, issued a press release saying that the Tuesday’s HSC and its equivalent examinations were suspended.
The chief adviser’s press wing shared the press release Tuesday morning and the HSC examinees became agitated over the delayed postponement following Monday’s Bangladesh Air Force jet crash into Milestone School and College in the capital’s Uttara area.
The government, amid the protests on Tuesday, withdrew the education ministry’s Secondary and Higher Education Division senior secretary Siddique Zobair.
The police picked up four protesters during the clash for interrogation but released them all as per the instruction from higher authorities, OC Khalid Mansur said.
